The universe is older and larger than we have imaginations to conceive. What we are looking at is simply the range of our limited technology to observe. When we rest our elbow on the edge of a table, we touch atoms that perhaps once formed the bones of a philosopher that lived a trillion trillion trillion trillion trillion trillion trillion years ago. We can only guess at how many civilizations have gone before us. How much knowledge has already been discovered and lost again as the universe has evolved.
